What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine (VM) is a virtual environment that functions as a virtual computer system with its own CPU, memory, network interface, and storage, created on a physical hardware system (located off- or on-premises). Software called a hypervisor separates the machine’s resources from the hardware and provisions them appropriately so they can be used by the VM. 

The physical machines, equipped with a hypervisor such as a Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), are called the host machine, host computer, host operating system, or simply host.  

The many VMs that use its resources are guest machines, guest computers, guest operating systems, or simply guests. The hypervisor treats compute resources—like CPU, memory, and storage—as a pool of resources that can easily be relocated between existing guests or to new virtual machines.

In a nutshell, a virtual machine is a software-based computer that has everything a physical computer has and can be used to perform operations that a physical computer would perform, such as hosting a web server, running an application, hosting files, or just using them as your personal computer or a server.

You can create a Windows virtual machine, Linux virtual machine, or even a mac virtual machine.  

What are the advantages of a virtual machine?
Numerous advantages of virtual machines include saving the cost of buying a new computer.  Imagine the cost of buying 10 computers to perform different tasks, when you could do that for free, without paying, and at zero cost by creating your own virtual machines and never having to pay a dime.
